In The Female Cat, Belgian artist Hildegarde Handsaeme brings feline character and feminine presence together in a playful geometric composition. A pale, curving figure fills the canvas, its tilted head, yellow eyes and raised tail lending it an alert, inquisitive expression.
Fine outlines connect rounded contours with angular forms, while deep blue, green and red colour fields frame the luminous silhouette. Two concentric blue and turquoise motifs punctuate the body, creating a visual rhythm that echoes the figure’s rounded shapes. The contrast between sweeping curves and crisp rectangular planes gives the painting both movement and stability.
Poised between animal portrait and imagined character, The Female Cat combines humour with compositional precision. Its distinctive personality emerges through the tilt of the face, the curling paws and the expressive economy of line, inviting the viewer into a world where tenderness and independence coexist.
